[hopefully] bringing Prince back to my former Prince blog

I am getting quite daring as of late and I’m hoping that I’ll be reeping the rewards soon.

I’ve been in a period of discontent for at least the past couple days. Sure, the X-factor and Dancing with the Stars have been great… Halloween was good and I’m still getting used to November.
Of course any Christmas commercials have me foaming at the mouth or muting the TV (the Pennsylvania Lottery has a way of doing that… I love their 25-30 year old commercial, but it’s too damn early, people)

Last year, the commercialism of Christmas was so bad that it took me forever to feel the holiday spirit. Part of it was out in Australia, in which case, I was cool with being away from the fiasco of bringing Christmas too early to TV sets.
This year, it’s not too bad so far. The one thing that might have me trippin’ over myself is the movie trailer for “Arthur Christmas.”
I have to wait 3 whole weeks for that movie to come out so I can look forward to the commercials stopping

nor have they been that terrible with excessive political ads either, so thank god

I’m pegging next week to be when I get called in for jury duty. There’s only so many more weeks to it and this has got to be it…

then of course there’s “Breaking Dawn” to look forward to in… let’s see, yeah I’m gonna do this… 15 days… it’s officially been given a PG13 rating.

Now, I’m thinking… of course, WTF… between the climatic final scene that they’re gonna shoot when Edward has to inject venom into Bella “Pulp Fiction” style, blood EVERYWHERE and Jacob imprinted with newborn Renesme… and the sex scenes between Edward and Bella…

c’mon, how can it not get that R-rating?
sheesh… is this indication or what, that I’ve seen too many R-movies recently to where I accept them even crave them at times…
not really… as it turns out, “50/50” was R-rated as well and there was somewhat of a sex scene in there… no nudity, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt had a girl grinding on top of him in bed… which in retrospect doesn’t make a lot of sense… he has spinal cancer so he shouldn’t be on his back

Well… seeing as I’ve kinda (okay, I have) been a movie buff lately, I have checked out the Wikipedia article a couple of times about the MPAA ratings… how they decide what gets what rating… I went there initially to see when the PG13 rating came out (the Purple Knights had a disparity about it, wondering if UTCM came out before or after that… for the record, fellas, 1984 cuz of Gremlins & Temple of Doom… and UTCM is PG13)…
curiosity has run away with me a couple of times and for whatever reason, my stomach convulses in discomfort when I look under the parental advisory section on imdb… especially when it comes to Disney movies. Technically, there’s a lot given away in Disney movies that you miss out on when you’re a kid… but a lot of it is pretty disturbing. “Who framed Roger Rabbit” the scene with Judge Doom’s true identity is revealed… I’d gone into “Pinocchio” a couple of times here already… don’t have to repeat how messed up it is and I don’t even remember that much about it

I’m good at repressing unpleasantness… I’ll leave it like that…

but as a movie buff, somewhat of a critic as I’ve somewhat become πŸ˜• I’ll try to go along with what the professionals would say…

R-ratings are generated from the following criteria: sexual content, profanities, nudity, blood/gore…
there have been discretions as to how much cursing can be in a movie for it to take that leap… this is one of two reasons I believe Twilight got away with this… there isn’t any cursing in any of the books. Of course, the harsher critics might blame it on Stephenie being a mormon, the same reason why she put off the sex scenes until their marriage and why those scenes didn’t get all that much description. It’s very much implied and there is plenty of evidence later on between all the scraps and bruises covering Bella’s fragile human skin and… well… that additional extra something

I believe the cardinal rule of profanities is that if there’s only one or two instances of a couple of those words… $@^# and f#@&… but if there is repetitive profanities… MF being among them, then yes, there’s grounds for an R rating…

sexual content depends on what’s been protrayed, how much is being given away. Nudity goes into this… female nudity, if it’s brief has a minimum of a PG13 rating… and if it’s more than a few seconds, it could hold up.
Oh right, drug content… that’s another huge thing… that’s why “Less than Zero” is R-rated along with “Pulp Fiction” (which is guilty in a bunch of other ways too) and “Charlie Bartlett” (which I could campaign for it to be PG13… excessive reference to/and use of prescription drugs doesn’t strike me as drug content… not as much as cocaine or heroin would… other than that, there’s one small scene of female nudity, two high school girls in passing… I guess the brief scene where Charlie Bartlett & his g/f Susan are doing it in the back seat of a car counts for something… and haha… a couple of f-bombs from Robert)…

there’s no drug content AT ALL in Twilight, so that can’t be it…

supposing that there’s the insuination of sex or a brief instance of it, it could get away with PG13… but if there’s implied sexual action, thrusting, moaning… some or all body parts could be shown… and in nearly all cases, if there is male frontal nudity, it’s an automatic R-rating…

ok, my computer just froze for 5 minutes, WTH… :sigh:

guys can talk about discrimination here all they like… a guy can be on screen bare chested and it could be G rated if it’s not sexual in any way…
female frontal nudity, on the other hand, aspires a PG13 rating at the minimum… and male frontal nudity is, as I just said, almost always generates an R-rating

I guess it boils down to how much there is so it draw the R-rating…

via interviews, Twi-hards have been assured by a couple parties that the final scene will be epic, just as bloody and gory as it was depicted in the book… like a horror movie.
But that’s just one scene, probably no more than… let’s see… the last 5-10 minutes

so I can only conclude that they cut back on the sex scenes… I believe there are two… one is with the two of them in a really, really warm lake so that Bella doesn’t get deterred by Edward’s cold flesh, and another with them in bed together and of course Edward being the overly strong vampire, he’s the monster causing injury and damage beyond his control

not that I’m overly curious to see too much :rolls eyes: …I was blushing in another recent instance… I’m betting the case is that Kristen Stewart showed hers, but Rob Pattinson didn’t show his… I imagine he could be a little self-conscious or whatever, but I’m only saying its not entirely fair. I mean it was written in the book that while there was blood everywhere, Bella was nude… unless of course they did some coverage when Edward drives the needle of venom into her heart

I’m a little furious about it not drawing the R-rating, but whatever… in the long run, I might be grateful for that what do I know anyway

one movie that is almost guaranteed to draw the R-rating is David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”… it’s my understanding that all of his movies have been R-rated… except maybe Benjamin Button, that mighta been PG13

My past few entries over the past several months have certainly revealed me to be the movie buff that I am… almost as if I’m taking on another personality. I’d become somewhat of a movie snob in some cases… but just because I’d seen a couple of Charlie Chaplin films, doesn’t mean that my tastes are better than anyone elses.

One day I ought to find a list of movies… 100 movies to see before you die 😎 I’m sure I’d seen a bunch of them

Reelz’s resident movie critic Richard Roeper picked 10 for a list, and I didn’t see all of them… maybe 3-4 of them… let’s see…

The Searchers, have not
This is Spinal Tap, have not (meaning to)
It’s a Wonderful Life
some french film I forget the name of… Breathless?
Annie Hall, have not
Pulp Fiction, most certainly have (and glad too)
Shawshank Redemption (been meaning to see that)
Citizen Kane
Godfather I & II (saw one, parts of two, but don’t wish to see the rest of it)

I think he picked Saving Private Ryan & Wall-E for spots 11 and 12
but I’m forgetting one (btw, he picked the Godfather series to take the top spot together)

me, I’m thinking that some I agree with and some I’m not sure… it’s all up to your own opinion, I guess. I’m so glad that Gone with the Wind wasn’t his top pick… or Titanic

I could just as easily put my own list together, but it’d take a while to put them in order

I loved “Black Swan” and saw it rather recently so I’m dying to put it on my list, but I might just wait for some of the hysteria to fade away first…

I’ll have to see “Modern Times” again to be positive, but if I could put one Charlie Chaplin film on my list of must-see movies… it’s “City Lights” because it’s a rom-com that accomplishes everything through the musical score and Charlie’s pantomime… not to mention the fact he wrote the screenplay & the music and directed it… the way it (my computer’s being ridiculously slow, leaving me unable to type as fast as I’m used) brings forth the feelings you’re meant to feel without the today’s cinematic luxuries… just amazing…

part of my feeling a bit low started a couple of nights ago.
I’d been waiting/wanting to see “Lethal Weapon” which I’d only seen once years ago and aside from the first scene with Mel Gibson and where he talks the jumper off the roof, I don’t remember anything… oh there’s Danny Glover’s “I’m getting too old for this $#%&” line

I bargained and decided to go after the first 90 minutes (with commercials, mind you… it was going from 11-1:30 on Reelz)… because I knew if I didn’t, I wouldn’t get up until late the next day and I didn’t need grief coming up about that…
and it was all for the greater good. I enjoyed my trip to dreamland that night despite the fact I couldn’t remember what I dreamt about

I’d seen so many movies in the past couple months that very few have gotten me THIS excited about it. I was going into it, really having a great time… and it was so easy. I fell right into the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

now I know that Robert & Mel are really good friends, have been since 1990 when they did “Air America” together, maybe even longer…
I saw, first of all… why Robert admires the hell out of the guy. His acting in this is brilliant beyond words. I’d only seen a couple of his movies too… part of Lethal Weapon 2 (yet I gave myself credit for having seen the whole thing… I should probably remedy that sitch-iation), this one, and The Patriot… never saw Braveheart and I’m getting to thinking that maybe I ought to see Braveheart, lol… even if it is sevearl hours long.
I listened to Eric Clapton’s score, which Robert pointed out in that Blockbuster featurette he did for MTV (you can check it on YouTube, I have seen it maybe 3 times)… he picked Swordfish, The Matrix and Lethal Weapon as his three movies… also said something like “if you haven’t seen ‘Rain Man’ in a couple months, I recommend seeing it again”… haha…)

great music by this man. I knew he made “Layla” among the best pieces of guitar work I’d heard in my life… really brings out the emotion of Riggs

another thing… I was FLIPPING out when I found out this was a Christmas movie too… I’m thinking WTF?!… but yeah… the sheer genius of it was so tangible that I could just chill with it forever. sometimes I wish I had managed to stay up, but my eyes were starting to go after the first hour… even though there was plenty of action to make it interesting. Never lost interest

then I remember that Shane Black wrote this… the same man behind “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”… my god… even back then, he was brilliant at storytelling. that’s another movie I’d put on my top 100 list… probably the best independant film I’d ever seen (with Little Miss Sunshine being a close 2nd or 3rd)

something else that I couldn’t help but notice…
aside from seeing the ep. of Family Guy again… for maybe the 3rd time the past 6 months… I haven’t had much to do with Robert in the past week. I’m very hesitant to say that his abscene has been the reason I’d been feeling, not quite right… that’d be ridiculous… as if one person was responsible for my entire happiness… a celebrity no less :rolls eyes:

might have been my imagination, but little bits and pieces of Mel Gibson’s acting, his facial expressions specifically… they were kinda familiar πŸ˜‰ not to mention the dude has an excellent voice (I wracked my brain, thinking he oughta do more voiceovers… the only one I can recall is playing John Smith in Disney’s “Pocohantas”)

I’ve kinda noticed that I’ve been trying to get into movies… just to justify watching them in place of doing whatever the hell else I could do… but “Lethal Weapon” felt like one of those reasons why Robert loves movies, loves to do movies and likes to take his job from the moviegoer’s perspective. Something else I got was the fact he chooses his roles based on the experience he can get from them… how it enriches and betters him as a person to take on the lessons learned in the movies

1987 seemed to be a hecka of a year for coming-out parties for celebrated actors that really solidifed them as stars in the eyes of the people… Lethal Weapon & Less than Zero

yesterday, because it had been on E! so many bloody times, I decided to finally watch “Georgia Rule” and with that, I think I had seen all of Lindsay Lohan’s movies except for two… “Chapter 27” about John Chapman, the guy who killed John Lennon where she plays a small part, not sure if I’ll watch it just for that… but I’ll see what happens (I did watch “Nowhere Boy” because it was about a young John Lennon… that was really good too) and the cheesy horror movie “I know who killed me”

the ironic thing was as they were showing it… this is about a rebellious teenager fresh out of high school who gets shipped off to her grandma’s in Idaho for the summer… they were scrolling on the bottom that Lindsay is being requested to report to prison for a 30-day sentence… and if she doesn’t show up by the time the week is out, she’ll have to serve 270 days
this is all from not reporting to community service, which violated her probation

now… knowing however much I know about Robert’s… history… I’m hesitant to add another word to that… doesn’t make me an expert…
I know that he was given a suspended prison sentence and had violated his probation twice… he served 6 months for the first violation and for the 2nd, he was given a 3-year sentence… and (I believe cuz of good behavior), he only served 16 months

what I find pretty astounding is the fact that there was no break in time that indicated his jail time… for every single year in the 90’s, he is listed doing at least one movie, sometimes two…
the only break I see… is 2001-2… when he was in rehab for two more charges added to his record…

but anyway… I am kinda curious and probably now I’m going to look up just what it is that she’s going to jail for, why she had to do community service and all that… I’m assuming incidences of being pulled over for drunk driving and/or drug possession…
I gotta wonder if she’s used all of the money she made in her movies to pay for the lawyer that keeps pulling her out of jail or softening the sentencing on her… conveniental wisdom says that eventually you’re going to run out of money and the only option is to do time in prison.

supposing Robert gave a damn (he had told Aussie TV personality Rove, when asked if he’d either do a movie with Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohn, he said neither)… he’d probably say something like “you gotta face up your mistakes and deal with it, that’s only way to move on”…

that’s pretty much my take on the whole thing. I’d kept out of everything the tabolids have been saying about her, still love her movies, her albums and think highly of her… she was a role model to me at some point, not so much now (obviously)…
but I think that enough is enough. I don’t want her to be the punchline of all the jokes anymore, want her to be taken seriously again and be known for more than just all the negative things. And with Amy Winehouse in mind, I would love for her to be able to turn things around because that could be what’s coming next if something doesn’t change. I’d hate to think like that, but it’s the truth. Negative behavior is going to catch up to you at some point

I wouldn’t sign off on her being sent to the same heavy-duty prison Robert went to, but I think she needs to do time. I remember the Paris Hilton scandal where she spent maybe a couple of days in prison and her folks bailed her out because she couldn’t take it. I can’t care who you are or how famous you are, you gotta come clean about these things.

I’m always going to be on her side in all this, not with the reporters or the media that have blown her crimes out of proportions as if it’s the only important bit of news there is…

:GASP: phew…
I saw the headline on imdb.com that read “Willy Wonka Actor Dies”… immediately, I’m panicking because I think it’s Gene Wilder…
it’s the guy who played Violet’s dad… he was 88 and died of cancer…

the day that Gene Wilder dies is going to be a sad day indeed… I’d only seen two of his movies, but my god, he’s a genius…
he’s about the same age as (or rather was) Mr. Miyagi and Pat Morita had died at least 5 years ago… and that was a really sad day. He was the best teacher ever 😎

yeah, it looks like all DUI business… at least nothing more extreme was involved.

I think I can spare a few word about the X-Factor before I get to my last bit of subject matter (boy I’ve been up here a while… working on this entry for an hour or so)…

it was a really good night, it’s going to be hard to tell who’s going home. Depends on what America is interested in, I guess

1. Stereo Hoggz… aside from the choreography and the backdrop “Rhythm Nation” didn’t do anything for me… they might be on the chopping block cuz they went first

2. Chris Rene… not sure of the name of the song, lol… but he hip-hop-ized it and… wow, I gotta say this guy has it going on, really knows what he’s doing and more to the point, he makes hip-hop look good… my overall opinion is that if I can understand what they’re saying, what the words are, they have a good message and good rhythm… then hey, hip-hop could be gold 😎 needs to be handled just right

3. Rachel Crow… “Walking on Sunshine”… really, Simon? that is such a throwaway song choice, I’d heard it a million times… and what’s with changing the lyrics to “you’re my sunshine”… the song is a epheumism for something else, but c’mon, there was no point to that, really… she sang it well and really brought light to the stage, but c’mon… better song choice, please!

4. Leroy Bell… eh… I wasn’t feeling it… it was a so-so song choice, took forever to get started, didn’t really know what song it was… I’m just not sure. he’s very likable guy, but the song didn’t do him any favors… but that’s just me

5. Lakoda Rayne… I don’t care what Simon says about their outfits being old fashioned… I do kinda agree they don’t need “the four seasons” to really set them apart… they’re just a really good girls’ group that just turned it out with their harmonies… one or two bum notes maybe, but I really like them a lot… keep it going, Paula 😎 (at one point in the show, they were talking about the new ways to vote, the new app, the new Droid app… Simon was saying how great the Verizon commericals are and Paula spat out her soda… I was thinking the same as she was “that’s because you’re in all of them!” lmao)

6. Josh (can’t remember how to spell his last name, lol)… I was very skeptical and nervous when I recognized his song as “Jar of Hearts”… a great first single by Christina Perri (I ought to get her album at some point too), Simon called it one of the best songs written in the past 2 years… and I totally agree. I was on edge, not sure where it was going to go cuz… this guy’s voice is so good but I’m dying for some Nickelback or rock song in general to come from him… but maybe 2/3rds of the way through, it started to build a bit… I can’t say the arrangement was all that great, lyrically it was jumping around so the essence of the song got kinda lost along the way…
but his last 30 seconds, finishing with the last verse, gave me chills… really brought a whole new life to it, so maybe I oughta to watch it again

7. Melanie- “Desparado”… it’s another ballad, but not by Mariah, Whitney or Beyonce, so it’s a different kind of step… this was AMAZING… she procured at least 30 of my votes in part cuz of this and the fact I don’t want her to go home prematurely… so amazing

8. kid…. he mashed up two different rhythms that I knew… the second was from “get your freak on” by Missy Elliot and the other one… can’t quite remember right now… but he was giving me a headache, couldn’t understand a word… they even let him write his rhymes, and yet they made Chris Rene pick a song when he’s used to just singing his own stuff (I respect the fact he can write πŸ˜‰ he truly knows the kind of artist he is if he can manage that)…
I swear, if he was on any other team than LA’s, he wouldn’t be here… he only picked him up cuz he dealt with the likes of Usher, Rihanna and Bieber (btw, I think those “baby daddy” rumors are totally bogus… a cry for attention and/or looking for their own cut)

9. Intensity- did a medley of “Kids in America” and another song… that I can’t remember… but I thought that first song was really generic as a song choice… yet I think the 2nd song kinda won me over, I was under the impression that maybe they’re starting to hit it off as an artist

10. Drew- I’ll say the same, if she wasn’t on Simon’s team, she wouldn’t be here… I didn’t quite recognize the song, but she sang it well… she is good, but I don’t think she’s exceptional… i.e. deserving of the title of the show

11. Canti! (Marcus Canty)… I was kinda shrugging off as him being like Bobby Brown… I know that dude for two things… okay, three… he was part of a rapping group in the 80’s… his biggest song was “My Pregoative” and the whole bit of domestic abuse involving Whitney Houston… I buy into him as much as I do Chris Brown… for that reason alone… not good people…
he started with lyrics from “Nothing like you” (that Bruno Mars/B.O.B. duet)… I was ready to cry fowl… and then he went into “Every little step”… I saw the video once, but before, I only knew it as a song that was a duet between the Swedish girls group Play and Aaron Carter for Radio Disney…

this performance was FUN… I loved the dancers, I loved the way he handled it and himself on stage… I could definitely chill with Canti for a couple more weeks 😎

12. Stacy Francis… I like her, not so much the song… I didn’t recognize the gospel song at all so I was put-off by it… she sang it well and everything, I didn’t think it was the best song of the night…

according to Yahoo, it came out recently that she wasn’t entirely an unknown and therefore she’d been procuring some hate on the Internet… the fact is that she had sung back-up for Prince, Madonna and many others before, but she never made it big as a solo artist… I don’t really see much of an issue with that… supposedly that was big enough of an issue that it got Carly Smithson and Melanie Doolittle booted off “America Idol” for not getting enough votes…
Leroy Bell has the same thing going on… he did back-up and had worked with some artists before but didn’t make it as a solo artist… I think the hate is coming from the fact these things from their pasts weren’t brought out into the open in their auditions…

it’s going to be a tough call tonight, that’s all I can really say.

and I guess I’ll end this entry for the moment… or else people will start wondering where I’d been all day :roll eyes: I do feel a little better, though.

I’m hoping this lull in the action between big theater releases will give me time to address “The Word” for the first time in ages…

oh and last night, because Canty’s last 4 digits were 9311… I had to listen to The Time for that one song… haha… maybe he ought to get one of their songs to sing… the same swagger and attitude seems to be there, lol

[after the results]

yeah, I guess it was legit that Intensity went home… a 10-person group wouldn’t have worked out too good. “Glee” is one thing and Sugar Beats is another, but I just didn’t think there was enough cohesiveness there.

And strangely, for the first time, I found myself backing Stereo Hoggz… if they had done more songs like that… like the Boyz II Men type of style, then I’d enjoy them a lot more than I have. Just then, it all came together.

btw, love the different format, announcing who’s through one by one… doing the recap all in the beginning… excellent

another thing I must say before I take this to… whatever place I feel like taking it to (and as another aside, seeing a new trailer for Sherlock 2 has me thinking I might do a little YouTube surfing later… it’s been a while… a week feels like an eternity, but it was an eternity not wasted wallowing in what I didn’t have going on… always feels good to get away sometimes)…

firstly, I hope at some point that the Michael Jackson film “This is it” makes cable on a channel I actually have. I’m quite curious to see it πŸ˜‰ though I’m kinda shy about letting my folks know that. It probably will be worth those $20, but in most cases, I prefer to see stuff before I buy them…
and I really hope that that Conrad Murray fellow doesn’t get off

the past several overly publicized cases… every single time, the person we thought was guilty was found innocent…
O.J. Simpson (and that ass even wrote a book that said flat out he got away with murder… that one dude could say all he wants about how OJ had a “dream team”… they cheated justice)

I feel kinda bad about this now… I thought Michael Jackson was guilty of… whatever the hell it was… back in the 90’s… all of these celebrities, friends of his took the stand (Maculay Culkin among them) saying he was innocent… at the time, I was flipping that he got off because… hey, I thought it was because he was a celebrity…
but, you know, I did a bit of re-evaulating after his death… he does have a sense of class and in ways he is in a class of his own (I just prefer Prince, although I could definitely say I enjoy “Bad” just as much, if not more than some of Prince’s albums like D&P… just as a random example)… and maybe it was just all a publicity stunt, people looking for a cut of his money… money that’s rumored, he didn’t really have to give… there was the whole fact that Neverland Ranch was in bankruptcy… which coulda been a couple years after this trial took place… I don’t really know what to believe, but I retract things I have thought/said regarding this matter those years ago…

I think I was just furious that they spent all this air time on this case… and people being nailed for crimes is just more exciting than finding it was a media circus… wasted months, even years on this…

then of course the whole Casey Anthony thing… :sigh: word is that if they hadn’t recommended the death penalty, she would have been found guilty and thrown in jail…
but man, I was FURIOUS when I found that out. Though not as furious as some of the women I’d befriended on Facebook (ones that I actually know in real life, mind you… of my 138 Facebook friends, I think I know all but 5-6 personally), they posted all kinds of angry comments that ended with “repost this if…”

that case went back for years… I was in college when they were talking about her being missing, looking for her and then it came out that she was found dead… 2 years later, her killer, whoever it was… whether it was Casey or someone else… didn’t get punished for it…

I am really hoping that justice is served this time cuz they really are spending a lot of time on this case… I think what gets under my skin the most is the suggestion by the defense that Michael Jackson offed himself…
I thought the prosecution brought forth an expert witness that said he couldn’t have possibly injected himself with the final dose of what killed him

it’s a tough call… I think the cards are stacked against this guy… him changing his story a couple times, and the delayed call to 911 are the most suspicious details…

I could just as easy use my limited experience in this area to explain myself… addicts aren’t in their right minds sometimes, especially if they’re really abusing something. It sounds really clear that Michael Jackson was in that state between what was keeping him up at night and the Propofol that was to help him sleep.
Now, this doctor is like all doctors… he takes the Hippocratic Oath that says “do no harm”… he was prescribing these drugs and at some point (geesh, I like those three words together today), he should have made a judgement call… when to call it quits, when is enough, enough… someone that intoxicated isn’t going to be able to make a legit, thoughtful decision on something like that

it’s somewhat of a different take on the whole “is the enabler responsible” thing… in the case I have in mind, it’s pretty obvious… Julian with his addictive personality didn’t need to be enabled any more than he was…
doc prescribed and injected the meds, couldn’t have the eye to see the difference between following orders and following the oath of “do no harm”… I see it as an open & shut case… he’s the only one who could have prescribed and injected the meds, so he’s responsible, that’s it…

and this time, if it goes array, it won’t be cuz of the media circus thing… it’s because he will have got off something he wasn’t meant to get off of

yeah, I still feel pretty bad that I didn’t really give a damn about this guy until the day he was gone… but I’d made up for it little by little  two albums, taking note of the goings on this murder trial…

I can only hope that Prince will be equally as celebrated when his time comes… in however many years from now… I’m betting a long time… I’m afraid to throw out a number in case I’m right or drastically wrong

and as I’m about to launch into a list of ground rules I’m gonna make for myself regarding “The Word,” I gotta get something else out about Prince before I do so

[side-note: happy 100th birthday, Chevy… without you, there’d be no “Little Red Corvette” or any of those other 100’s of great songs… not to mention the awesome sports cars of that name]

a week ago, I kinda stuck my nose where I don’t like to stick it… Prince’s personal life… his so-called love life… I knew that would have me thinking badly of him… and some of that negativity, I’d been feeling chilling to some of his music

I was in a discussion with a friend about the fact Sheila E. had gotten fed up with Prince, not wanting to perform with him anymore cuz he wants her to stick to a 2-song playlist (hey, can’t say I blame her) and I was under the impression that the two of them got along real well… even when he was butting heads with everyone else, their relationship was solid…
of course I was under the naive impression that the two of them never dated or went beyond the professionalism… can’t say I know for sure either way…

it all kinda started with Prince trademarking the names of bands he created… he only put the people together and wrote their music… but he can’t trademark or copyright the personalities that made them work
then we tripped over a wire in that same conversation… supposedly Prince & Mayte not having the perfect marriage/relationship we were lead to believe

supposedly there was an interview with her circulating the web and there was a .org thread about it at one time… I refused to read it and I do to this day because I don’t want to know too much about that… don’t want to hear that she didn’t call him Prince simply because she didn’t see him as that person (as she said in the 1996 “Honeymoon phase” interviews)…
rumor/fact is that he was keeping tabs on her like a green-eyed monster, had to know who she was with and where she was all the time… both cheated on each other in the later 90’s, but Mayte did so to prove a point… so the story goes

meanwhile, I’m listening to some Rave tracks… specifically the ballads, “Man o’ war” and “I love u but don’t trust u anymore”… with new ears… I’m very suspicious that he was overstating things on his side… playing the victim when he had his share of the blame too

I dunno… all this talk has me thinking I oughta share my blog address with Mayte as we’re supposedly Facebook friends  I think I shared it with Alan Leeds once and he never commented about it

I’m not sure if she’d be interested in hearing me write about her ex-lover. For all I know, she could be taking the Jill Jones attitude and not wanting to hear any mention of him around her because she wants to stand on her own feet with her own career. as far as I can gather, Mayte still is making the stage sizzle with her belly-dancing 😎

in doing all this, I might have broken one of my unwritten rules of engagement on this blog… but I have to be up front about my discontent with Prince in some areas. I’m thinking he isn’t the greatest role model. He’s not very good in relationships. I’ll just leave it at that.
Has me kinda wondering if he still has that celibacy thing going on or he broke that vow a year ago…

except for album critiquing, I’d prefer to show Prince in a positive light. So many of his fans are jaded about this or that that he’s doing/not doing in music… they’re being overly negative about him, still are to this day… they can handle that. There’re fewer people like me who chooses to think positive

or rather turning a blind eye to his flaws… knowing that they’re there, but not going heavily into them

that could be among the ground rules for “The Word”

– except for matter-of-fact statements for biographical purposes or lyrical inspiration [the many instances of Susannah , no discussion about Prince’s relationships with women

I really do want to believe that Prince believed those words he kept saying about soulmates and destiny… there were dozens of interviews he did in the mid-90’s where he went in detail about them. speaking of the unspeakable

– keep discussion of Prince’s [deceased] son to the absolute minimum… his heartbeat being the backing rhythm for Emancipation track “Sex in the Summer” and the mention of his death… which quote “may have been a factor in Prince and Mayte’s divorce”

certain issues need to be handled delicately and those are among the most delicate… for sure…

several Prince biographies exist, most of which are out of print… all of them are straightly biographies, but are chock full of information. I had actually seen “A Thief in the Temple” in a book store but I didn’t pick it up because I heard it didn’t serve its intended purpose…
but the most famous is, of course, Per Neilsen’s “Dance Music Sex Romance”

I procured (another word I like a lot today) the first… looking… whoa… 127 pages… a lot is credits… 109… and it goes from the very beginning to the release of the Batman soundtrack in 1989

this pdf and the Rolling Stone interview called “Prince Speaks” will be the main biographical material I’ll draw information from… along with maybe a few tidbits from Mica Paris’s BBC radio broadcast that she did in 2003.
there is some good information there too, but I wanna watch my step with some of it, especially some really personal stuff. I’m a little hesitant to address a discrepency that Prince had with his father when he was a teenager.

because it didn’t work with his mom & his stepdad, Prince wanted to live with his dad… word is that he kept having girls in the house and he got kicked out by his dad because he didn’t like that this was going on under his roof. I’m under the impression that Prince was maybe 14 at the time.
I’m already pretty prudish when it comes to young people getting it on… but I’ll agree with Nelson Sr. here… that’s too young to be having girls in the house with that going on

in the Rolling Stone interview, Prince described their differences as his dad running to his own beat and the two of them were clashing because they just ran differently. something to do with that musical intuition they both had in different ways

Purple Rain most certainly deserves a section called “how much biography was in this ‘semi-autobiographical’ film?” there I could go into some things and we can do some guesswork on what happened, what didn’t… there are a few things I know for sure… Dr. Fink on BBC said that he believed that Prince’s stepdad was abusive and that was part of the reason he left… which may or may not be true… that is certainly more likely than Prince’s dad being that way with him. He even said that he knew Nelson Sr. pretty well and didn’t see him being that type of person

I’m lead to believe that his song “Sister”… which talks about incest, refers to this time… Prince wanted to be let back in the house, talks to his sister, who tells him to ask again… he’s still denied re-entry into the house, so the song could have been written about the fact she let him down… or it could just be him screwing around with the notion of incest

I’m gone into it a couple of times as to what bits of Purple Rain I know to definitely be biography and which ones never happened… there’s a lot of guesswork in between… the Lake Minnetonka scene is among many where I could say “Your guess is as good as mine”… for some strange reason, I think I see Prince pulling that a couple of times with his girlfriends, lol

I’m not sure how 7silluohette is going to do their project. For a couple years, they’d been getting input from all walks of purple people to put together a collaborative book (whose first copy will go out to Prince himself) where they talk about how great his music is, why they liked this or that, how they got into them… I came up with “The Word” before I knew they were doing something similiar

since biographies have been done dozens of times already, I want to minimalize that here… aside from a means of introduction and if its condusive to the book as a whole, I want it to only be a small percentage of it. Like 70/30…. 80/20…

with the 80 being album reviews/discussion and going into different eras of his career… fashion whenever its relevant… relationships ONLY when they’re relevant

I also kinda wanted to limit our own involvement in this aside from being critics…

there will be plenty of articles that go into first impressions of albums… certain breaking points… milestones… origin stories for sure, like our first music video… first thing that got us into this…

and of course there’ll be some commentary on the few TV appearances that he did… between maybe going into one or two of the “Honeymoon phase” interviews… MTV in 1985… Tavis Smiley just recently… maybe Larry King in 1999… and perhaps George Lopez… we can always debate about those later…

I think the greatest trick is to find a place to stop… when enough is enough, I’m fine with what I wrote and I don’t want to add anymore or feel guilty about leaving something out
