Nostalgia going back nearly 20 years

I thought I’d wait until at least tomorrow for my next entry, seeing as I just did one… but this couldn’t wait. I had to cover it while my memory was still fresh.

I’m no stranger to nostalgia… there have been several movies and series, most of which I mentioned on here at some point… there have been a couple that go back for years, but part of me always kinda remembered it.

Purple Rain was one example… it only took me maybe 4-5 years after seeing the part that changed me forever, to actually rent the movie and see it start to finish
(as much as I’d like to, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to as long as “Graffiti Bridge” is still kinda fresh… the last thing I want is to watch Purple Rain and for things to get more convulated than they already are… seeing as I’ve seen the movie a million times, lol…)

The Dark Crystal… for years, I’ve wanted to see it, check back into it… all because we saw it in school and only got halfway through the movie…

I had a very very vague recollection of a couple things…

my very earliest memories of nostaglia stem from a few things… Care Bears is one of them… the 2nd movie, I get a little… you know… about it… haven’t seen it in at least 10 years, maybe more…

80’s videos… although nothing was really all that strong except for Billy Idol, Whitney Houston and Madonna (not until I was in my preteens when the rest started to work me over)

there was one recorded VHS tape we had… yeah, we have a bunch… still haven’t checked into a bunch yet…

we got rid of it where, no joke, it was so old and messed up that it killed our last VCR… now we have this one that has DVD-recorder… which we’ve only used a couple times… freaking idiots made sure we couldn’t record copyrighted stuff just so we have to buy all that stuff

on it was two things:
The Muppets go to Disney World…

and the movie “Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer”

when we recorded it on the VHS, I don’t know what happened to the quality of the thing… faulty, sucky insufficient technology… the film was snowing in a lot of the first 10 minutes of the movie…

here’s the synposis, from what I remember…
Kermit takes all of the Muppets to spend time with his family at the swamp… bleck… it looked so realistic with all the mosquitos and the humidity and stuff… I remember one point where all the frogs were singing this song and a bucket got stuck on Beaker’s head

(spoiler alert: they’ve tried a few attempts, one involved HOT sauce… gotta love Jim Henson’s logic… they never got it off, lol)

someone spilled the beans that Disney World was behind the swamp… and everyone wanted to hightail it there… the different group of muppets had their musical numbers…

Gonzo and Camilia did one at a laundry department in a hotel how romantic

Miss Piggy was on a quest to find the Chinese Theater (when they do finally find it, everyone gets their footprints done… spoiler alert… the credits roll with her being stuck in the cement… so sad)… she went through a lot of thrill rides on her way, including the Tea Cups, Star Tours… and the Indiana Jones experience where she was Marian… obviously… looking back, that last scene was kinda scary when I was a kid, especially when they let the getaway wagon on fire… but she was ok

Kermit is trying to get everyone together and back to the swamp… and apparently this is one of Raven-Symone’s first appearances EVER… he meets her and they sing the Muppet classic “The Rainbow Connection”
(ahh… nostalgia’s smacking me around… )… when he takes off, once again inspired to continue on, she says something “I hate that he had to leave. I was just going to say its not easy being green”…

yeah I know, boo-hiss

just about everything the Muppets touch is golden… I’ll know that for sure whenever I see “The Muppets” (only freaking Starz gets it… at least they’re gonna give away The Social Network to show on cable… only a couple more days)…

anyway…
I have seen that movie a couple of times, can recollect a few scenes easily…

my sister was playing a DVD with a bunch of Care Bears cartoons on it…
ah, those were the days… oddly enough, most of them were from the 80’s and according to Wikipedia, they’re still running the franchise in other venues…

at the bottom of Wikipedia under related topics was Rainbow Brite…

I was thinking… OMG… I gotta check out the article… read the synopsis of the movie to see how much I remember… umm… very little…

Thank God for YouTube… someone uploaded the entire movie… it actually runs for a while… an hour and 85 minutes…

now I know for sure that wow, I have not seen this movie in almost 20 years… I had to have been 6-7-8 the last time I saw any of it… and buried very deep down is the movie and the characters…

I was kinda thinking… shoot, I’m gonna get so nostalgia as I do with so many things, my circuits will be overwhelmed and the recollection will carry some negativity with it…
I guess psychologists could call that regression… when you’re steeped in nostalgia and kinda wanna stay rooted in things from the past because they seem safer… I DUNNO, I’m just making this up as I go

I remembered the opening song… the hint of it…
one or two of the characters… maybe three… of course I remembered the title character… there’s a white fuzz-ball named Twink… and the robotic horse On-x… and one of the two bumping villians Lurky (because of his dim-witted voice, lol)…

There were only maybe… wow… only a few scenes in the entire movie that I remembered at all…

one was the very end where the villian is defeated…
a couple of lines, I remembered when I heard them… and when I read part of the info, I was thinking “oh yeah, I remember that too”

just to add the irony of all this… no joke, there was a bright golden sunset an hour ago. I go outside to walk the dog… and there was a really bright beautiful rainbow outside the front door…
awwwwww… I felt all warm and fuzzy

so my movie list is now down to 6 movies… I’m sure I saw this YEARS ago but remembered only maybe, lol, 1% of it… so I tacked it on earlier in the Word.doc

haha… I forgot she had a horse… and he could freaking talk… freaking talking horse!

although that wasn’t completely out of character… there was an old VHS we have of this animated short (or it could be a 60 minute thing, I’m not sure) about PJ Sparkles… that’s another bit of nostalgia right there, but I remembered it quite a bit better…
hmmm… Jodi Benson did her voice too… speaking and singing… Disney fans remember her as Ariel in The Little Mermaid

PJ Sparkles was kinda like an animated music because there were a lot of musical numbers in it (Rainbow Brite only had 2 songs… “Brand New Day” was at the beginning and end and there was another one during the credits)…
aww… I gotta go into PJ Sparkles now… just to get this all out there…
she was an orphaned girl living with her two foster parents… things start on a somber note because either she’s getting adopted or they have to give away her horse, Blaze… so we have a mopey song to start things out…
its kinda the same message/storyline as the Care Bears franchise… oh, I think the story is that she’s trying to get adopted but someone else just changed their mind about it… she wants a family, which is why she’s so sad…

something magical happens and she gets swept away with Blaze to another world… where there are children there looking for someone to be their leader and they don’t really have their place in things yet… using her new powers, she commissions three people… one is a guy (whose name I can’t remember), and two girls Glimmer and Chloe… to be in charge of things… while her duty is to help out lonely people on earth…

one is a lonely boy named Peter who is having trouble making friends… she tries to help him, but doesn’t quite know how… she just tries to teach him that you can’t make friends simply by one act of magic…

meanwhile, two villians arrive in the town… and they undo everything PJ did… all the good feelings are gone and everything falls into chaos

hmm… I forgot to mention that magic allowed Blaze to talk…
when PJ returns with Peter, she isn’t feeling well… however cliché it is, its the truth… PJ Sparkles lives on love… so being without it in this place has made her powerless… it also restores Blaze to his original form, non-talking. the villians use their power to destroy what good was left in PJ, who protects Peter…

he goes after her, trying to talk sense into her, but aww… after proclaiming his love and of course the magic of tears (I know that a little too well with my many favorite animated series)… everything is okay again… Peter is heralded as a hero and yeah, good prevails

I guess you could say PJ Sparkles infringed on Care Bears and Rainbow Brite, who may as well have copyrighted any use of rainbows as a trademark or expression of magic

Rainbow Brite and the people in RainbowLand have the duty of bringing the changes of seasons… obviously Rainbow Brite is in charge of changing things from Winter to Spring

and yeah, Starlite, her talking horse, has a rainbow mane and tail (all colors were present except for purple or any deriative… they stopped at blue)

The movie starts with a song, everyone coming to life again and her waking up… for either the entire winter season or just that particular night…

There are also two bumbing idiots, Murky and Lurky, who are the antagonists in RainbowLand… their goal is to make the world dark and gray.
Murky is the dominant of the two (lol, I remembered him when I saw him on screen the first) and Lurky was this indescrible bigfoot looking thing… he was like a big furry brown mass, but wore a pair of large red tennis shoes
They really don’t pose much threat and actually get in the way (at points) of the main villian of the movie

Rainbow Brite ushers in spring… so each time they make the transition, she has to take on Stormy… who is in charge of inclument weather and winter storms… she wasn’t going to give that up easily this year and she has her own horse, Sky Dancer… lol… the two of them were so cool that I almost wanted the movie to be about them…
Rainbow & Starlite had to beat Stormy in a race out of her thundercloud and they do…

apparently there’s one boy on Earth that can see her named Brian (gotta love logic in these cartoons)… she visits him and goes to usher spring with magical Star Crystals…

but nothing happens…

On-x arrives in RainbowLand (not only is he robotic, but he’s propelled by rocket boosters in his feet)…
I have an extremely vague, my god I can’t believe I still remember this, recollection of watching this and, man, I’m trying to think about my young mind and how I made this deduction in the first place… I remember saying a couple of times in a row in somewhat of a flurry panic that he was “a bad horse” I mean, c’mon, it’s so obvious… he came from another planet, he was metallic black and looked like one of the horses of the apocalypse (although I didn’t know of those back then)…
and I have an even vaguer recollection of my mom telling me otherwise…

he was sent by his master Orin (lol… made me think about Orin from Neverending Story… a medallion made of two intertwining snakes that’s on the cover the “Neverending Story” book)
to bring Rainbow Brite to the planet Spectra to save it…

hmm… technically the name of the movie should be “planet stealer”… because Spectra is a planet, not a star… but it doesn’t have the same zing as alliteration…

On-x escorts them to Spectra… which is a shiny diamond planet… however cliché it may be, if Spectra got cloaked in darkness or something happened to it, spring would never come and life as we know would cease to exist

another vague recollection… a bunch of the indigenous fuzzy creatures have been hypnotized to weave this fabric that’s covering the brightness of the planet…

the villian is this selfish princess who wants it all to herself… planning to use her starship to bring it back home…
gotta love some of the comments “you know, for kids”… one of many taglines of the Nostalgia Critic… but some were kinda disturbing, people saying how hot the princess was and one asked if anyone else “got wood” watching her

 WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!

On-x brings them to join forces with this guy named Crys (why the hell Chris is spelled that way is beyond me… unless it has to do with the crystal-planet… lame…) who kinda doesn’t want much to do with Rainbow Brite because… you know… he’s a young boy of maybe 8-10 and to boys that age, girls have cooties and can’t do anything helpful

She wants to go to the castle to explain to the princess that everyone needs Spectra’s light and all that…
the princess has her eyes set on Rainbow Brite’s belt… that has a rainbow on it…

she is so tacky and stereotypical… she even has this pet diamond that she coddles, but when she turns around, she tells it that it can’t lay on her bed or its in the way or something…
seriously, there was a scene where she was walking it on a leash… LAME…

one thing that wasn’t lame was the score… this movie was done in 1985 (and according to IMDB, it was created within 3 months, the fastest time of any animated film)… and it reminded me a little of Purple Rain’s score and even some stuff by Wendy & Lisa… ooo… love love love…

let’s see… the belt gets stolen, Rainbow Brite and Crys get kidnapped… Starlite and On-x work together to save them and get the belt back…
they try to get away but the princess uses her magic to send them to another planet they can’t escape from…

they’re imprisoned in this rock tower, Starlite gets captures and… you know… they can’t escape or come down unless she hands over the belt…
there was one line by this “commander” on this planet that I remembered in the very back of my mind… pretty much him correcting her and saying that “Crusader” was his horse now…

On-x breaks out through the other side of the rock… they run into a bunch of lizard creatures… Rainbow Brite manages to get away, she comes across Orin (at last! we found him!) and they make their escape.
He gives her something to give to Crys… who is now old enough to become the warrior he dreams of being… a prizm that he wears on his wrist… combined with her rainbow beam, it can become a laser that freezes people or makes them non-threatening…

The good guys make their escape and storm the princess’s castle…

(Murky and Lurky make a few appearances throughout this as somewhat of cameos, but don’t impact the plot heavily… except they get in the way when the villians try to get to the good guys… like they’re passing through, lol)

They destroy the source of her power… a crystal inside of glass sphere… which breaks the spell on the fuzzy guys, who work with Orin to get rid of the mesh they’d been weaving over the planet

The princess gets into her ship… runs out of fuel to complete her objective… and actually (aww… I couldn’t believe she did this)… she threw her precious diamond into fire for one last bit of fuel… she’s set to crash into the planet to shatter it, but after shooting another rainbow beam to blind her, she cries out in horror “Not the rainbow!” (another thing I vaguely remember from way back when) and her ship explodes…

So… everyone’s safe… the universe is going to be okay… happy ending :w00t:

The credits had another song that was extremely catchy… so 80’s with the vocals (which is said to be the same person doing the voice for Rainbow Brite…)… so cheesy cuz it’s called “Rainbow Brite and me”

yeah, essentially… despite the cheesiness of some areas… it was a really great movie, I loved it… and I think it might become a guilty pleasure I might end up watching a couple of times on YouTube… but yeah, it was a lot of fun…they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore
